Who has to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect? 241-KIDS (241-5437) is the place to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Required under federal law, 241-KIDS provides a place for Hamilton County residents and mandated reporters such as doctors, social workers, teachers and others to let authorities know.
Do callers have to leave their name? No, but giving names allows Children's Services to contact individuals for more information if it is necessary. Also, confidentiality laws strictly protect any person information given by a person who reports potential child abuse or neglect. Although neighbors can sometimes figure out on their own who might have called, that information will not be divulged by Children's Services workers.
What happens when a report is phoned in to 241-KIDS? Specially trained workers staff the line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They ask questions that help them determine whether the information is an allegation of abuse or neglect. If you believe a situation is an emergency, call 9-1-1 first. Workers must then prioritize calls. This process takes many factors into account, such as a child's age and the severity of the alleged injury or neglect. Priorities are assessed using agency policies and procedures, guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and state laws. Emergencies are served first. An investigation typically begins within 24 hours of a call to 241-KIDS, if not sooner. The investigation will look into whether their is an actual injury to or neglect of the child, what the circumstances are, what caused it, and who is responsible. You may not know what is happening after you call, but know that allegations are investigated.
Does Children's Services press charges if allegations turn out to be true? Law enforcement officials and prosecutors will decide whether to press charges. Children's Services interest is in protecting the children involved. Remember that Ohio child abuse and neglect laws are not intended to punish, but rather to help families as much as possible. Children's Services will work to preserve the family unit whenever possible through supportive services and plans. Children are only removed from the home when sufficient protection cannot be provided to guarantee a child will be safe.
Police and other law enforcement officials who respond after getting a 9-1-1 call may contact 241-KIDS about situations they discover once arriving at a scene.
