Your Child's Life Depends on It

Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services this month will launch a child abuse prevention campaign called Choose Your Partner Carefully... Your Child's Life Depends on It.

The campaign seeks to increase awareness among mothers of the risk their children face when a non-related male is entrusted with their care. It will provide tools to help moms better evaluate the likelihood that a boyfriend could abuse their children.

A TV commercial, brochures and Web site (www.KnowTheWarningSigns.com) will stress warning signs and point out resources for mothers.

In Hamilton County, 17 children have died as the result of abuse and neglect since 2005 -- six attributed to a mother's boyfriend, who was not the child's father. About 15 percent of all children who died from abuse nationally in the past five years perished at the hands of their mom's boyfriend. In Hamilton County, the rate was 35 percent.

Dear friends,

Sometimes, mothers in love can’t see the warning signs. They think that because their partner loves them, he will love their child. It is a mistake that can be fatal.  

In Hamilton County, 35 percent of child abuse deaths in the past five years have been attributed to mom’s boyfriend. That’s higher than the national rate – 15 percent according to 2006 statistics from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System – and higher than the Ohio average of 28 percent.  

Hamilton County has had its share of high profile cases over the past five years. One death is too many. Mothers need to be aware that the partner they choose has a great influence in their child’s life. Choosing the wrong partner can be, literally, deadly.
