Alternative Response
New child welfare approach

Rob Sawyer of the American Humane Association is introduced by Children's Services Section Chief Traci Marr on Sept. 17 as the agency initiated training for a new child welfare approach.

Hamilton County Children's Services staff in September took a step toward implementing Alternative Response -- a new approach by Ohio's child welfare agencies to help families access services, support and other help that will resolve their concerns.

Children's Services caseworkers and managers learned about Alternative Response in several days of training by the American Humane Association. An education session for community partners is scheduled for Oct. 5.

What is Alternative Response?

* An alternative way to address allegations of child abuse and/or neglect that includes early family engagement, joint decision-making and service delivery in lieu of a traditional investigative approach.

* A partnership between the family and the agency to identify problems, develop solutions and implement services.

What is the goal of Alternative Response?

* Increased child safety and well-being.

* Fewer repeat cases of abuse or neglect.

* Lower placement rates of children in foster care.

* Reduced cost over time.
