What story did we tell in 2011? Reflecting on the past year with a colleague, I asked that question. I believe our agency’s 2011 “story” had many good chapters, and some challenging ones, too. In the end, our story was similar to one we tell every year – a story of helping this community in its time of need. News Hamilton County Job and Family Services Year in Review Great accomplishments were mixed with some tumultuous moments at Hamilton County Job and Family Services in 2011, but overall it was an important year for the agency. On Election Day, the Children’s Services levy passed with nearly 71 percent of the vote. Hamilton County Job and Family Services is the recipient of the approximately $40 million the levy raises each year to protect children in Hamilton County. “The overwhelming support we received on Election Day really emphasizes that the community as a whole still believes in our mission to ensure the safety, permanency and well being of children in our community,” Director Moira Weir said. “We will continue to use the money to protect Hamilton County children.” Toys for Tots Donates Gifts for 7,000 Children HCJFS has called in the Marines for help. This year Hamilton County Job and Family Services has teamed up with the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program to provide a toy for the thousands of children HCJFS serves and protects. Toys for Tots plans to provide one toy for the approximately 7,000 children HCJFS serves under 13 years old. As a way to individualize the gifts, Toys for Tots will bring all the toys to HCJFS and workers will be able to "shop" for the kids on their caseloads based on their knowledge of the child’s individual likes and dislikes. “The holidays can often be a difficult time for many of the children we serve. This time of year is meant to be a time to celebrate family, but many of the children we serve may be disconnected from their biological family or wishing for a forever family,” Weir said. “We can’t thank Toys for Tots enough for providing even one small joy to these children during the holidays.” |
