Director's Letter: Serious Questions Follow the Death of a Child Moira Weir

Damarcus Jackson’s heartbreaking death has this community – and JFS – asking serious questions.

This tragedy has reverberated through our building. When a child in our care dies, we take it very personally. Even more than that, several here had come to know Damarcus, and his loss has left them with heavy hearts.

I assure you we, as much as anyone, want to get answers to those questions. We welcome a system-wide examination of the decision making surrounding this young boy’s case. We also welcome the opportunity to educate the public about the child welfare system.

HCJFS Improves Service to Public Assistance Recipients

The recession, budget cuts, and exploding caseloads had a devastating impact on the community and Hamilton County Job and Family Services this summer, but the agency continues to make improvements to improve service to consumers.

“Over the summer this volatile combination of events impacted our ability to provide services in the manner you and we have been accustomed and for that we are truly sorry,” said Director Moira Weir.

Child Care Attendance Now Recorded Through Swipe Cards   

Beginning Oct. 30, Hamilton County Job and Family Services no longer issues vouchers for child care services. Instead, all parents are now issued a swipe card to swipe their child in and out of the day care center each day.

By now, parents should all have received their card and providers should be equipped with the necessary equipment.

Consumers to Access HEAP Through New Hotline

All Hamilton County Home Energy Assistance Program consumers will now be directed to a new telephone hotline.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), offered through the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency, begins Nov. 1. HEAP gives assistance to low income households to assist in heating costs.

This year, the Community Action Agency will no longer serve clients at Job and Family Services, but instead, all consumers will be directed to call (866) 747-1039 to receive services. Consumers will be able to receive information, schedule an appointment or receive assistance through the hotline. Applications can also be found online at http://ohio.gov/.
