Director's letter: Appointment to advisory committee is opportunity for community Moira Weir

As many of you know, helping families and children has been my passion for more than 20 years, since I joined the Big Brother/Big Sister program in Delaware not long after college graduation.

That is why I am extremely excited to have a formal chair at the table when the leaders of our state regularly discuss laws related to families and children.

Hamilton County has launched a public awareness campaign around child abuse that specifically targets those who encounter children in the course of their jobs and encourages them to report suspicions of abuse and neglect.

The “Do Ask, Do Tell” campaign goes beyond the bruises and encourages teachers, police officers, doctors, child care workers and other legally-designated “mandated reporters” to look for less obvious signs of neglect or even circumstances where children are placed into dangerous situations.

Children's Services levy to be on November ballot

The Hamilton County Commissioners voted Aug. 10 to put a renewal for the Children's Services Levy on the November ballot.

Voters will have the chance to renew the levy at 2.77 mills, the same level it has been since 1996. However, because of declining property values, the levy is expected to bring in about $1.9 million less, or approximately 5 percent, than it has in past years.
