Why would anybody want to become a fan of the Hamilton County (Ohio) Department of Job and Family Services' page on Facebook, the rapidly expanding social network?

To learn about the agency's programs and services -- and to get a heads-up about coming events, according to a recent survey of the page's 200-some fans. Some also use the page to ask questions and offer comments.

In January, the agency launched both a page and group on Facebook as part of an effort to improve accessibility and responsiveness. The page recently surpassed 230 fans and the group inclues more than 100 members.

Everyone surveyed found the agency's Facebook status updates valuable.

A large number of those participating in the survey were agency clients or social service partners -- two of its top strategic audiences.

“I am not always able to read printed information, so it is convenient to have the information available on my Facebook when I sign in,” one respondent wrote.

In response to the survey, the agency plans to continue providing information about programs, services and upcoming events on Facebook. It also intends to expand efforts to respond to clients' needs through social media channels such as Facebook. Feel free to offer suggestions by using Contact Us on www.hcjfs.org.
