New Year, new recruitment plans

Recruitment Advisory Committee, focus group to assist recruitment efforts

Recruiting for foster and adoptive parents in Hamilton County takes a new form in 2010, as a new group forms to assist with planning and getting the word out about HCJFS's need for good foster and adoptive parents.

The Community Recruitment Advisory Committee - comprised of representatives from foster and adoptive parent support group Southwest Ohio Foster Care Affiliate (SWOFCA), former foster youth, and staff from HCJFS Communications, foster care and adoption - will assist with developing and staffing events and finding ways to reach critical community audiences.

"All of these people offer various talents that can help," said Community Recruitment Manager John Cummings. "From community connections to writing and messaging expertise, we will have tools to help take the message to the community that we continue to need good foster and adoptive parents, particularly for older children waiting for adoption."

A foster and adoptive parent focus group is also in the works. Plans call for the group to meet two to three times a year to review materials and discuss ideas. Foster and adoptive parents interested in participating should contact John Cummings at (513) 946-2336.

Buckle up your kids right!

New Ohio laws and rules take effect that could mean fines for violators

If you are driving with a small child in your car, be forewarned - you can be cited if the child is not properly buckled up.

Ohio's new booster seat law is among new legislation taking effect this year that can affect all parents, including foster and adoptive parents.

Among the changes: beginning April 7, 2010, drivers in Ohio can be fined up to $75 if they don't put children ages four through seven, or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches tall, in a booster seat.

Other rule changes cover re-certifications, smoke-free environment and more.
